The core of adjusting excavator track chain tension lies in operating the track tension cylinder on the idler wheel side (it is filled with built-in grease; the cylinder’s extension and retraction are controlled by greasing and degreasing, which drives the idler wheel to move forward and backward, thereby tensioning or loosening the track chain). The entire operation can be completed in 5 minutes, and the key is to locate the correct grease nipple and master the standard tension level. Below is a step-by-step practical operation method, including safety precautions, tension judgment, and troubleshooting of common problems, suitable for all tracked excavators.

I. Essential Safety Preparations Before Adjustment (Avoid Derailment / Personal Injury)

1. Park the excavator on a hard, flat surface, stop the engine, remove the key and engage the parking brake.

2. Use the excavator bucket and track shoes to jack the side of the track to be adjusted off the ground (only one side needs to be jacked up; there is no need to lift the entire machine), and ensure the track can rotate freely.

3. Clear sand, mud and stones from the idler wheel and the inner side of the track frame to prevent jamming that may affect the adjustment.

II. Location of Core Components: Locate 2 Key Positions

The grease nipple (filling nipple) of the track tension cylinder and the bleed/drain screw (equipped on some excavators) are both located inside the track frame guard plate directly above or on the side of the idler wheel (some guard plates have a small opening, so there is no need to remove the entire guard plate). The grease nipple is connected to the track tension cylinder, which is filled with grease (yellow grease)—not hydraulic oil. Do NOT add the wrong fluid!
